Thought the old timer at the Local 169 hall was pulling my leg about preheating the tubes before rolling, he wasn't
I watched a guy named Dale at the Local 169 hall in Chicago tell me to preheat the tube ends to 150 degrees or so before rolling, and I figured a hot rolled joint was just an old story. We cut and roll tested six tubes on a 2 inch header and every preheated one pulled clean at 250 ft lbs while my cold rolls leaked at the first hold. How many of you do this on small bore work, or is it only worth the fuss on heavy wall?
