The old boilermaker at the Local 104 hall told me to torque my manway studs in two passes, saved me from a leak
I was buttoning up a 60 inch drum on a Thursday night in Stockton and the gasket kept weeping no matter how much I cranked on it. A guy named Roy who has been at Local 104 for 31 years walked by and told me to run the studs down hand tight in a star pattern then come back at 50 percent and again at full spec. I figured he was just old school but I did it anyway and the weeping quit on the first pass. Turns out I had been pinching the gasket on one side by going straight to full torque. Anyone else got torque patterns they swear by for different gasket types?
