That $380 stud finder I trusted was wrong on every single beam

Picked up one of those fancy multi-sensor stud finders from the supply house in Gary, thought it was the real deal. Spent an afternoon marking out hanger locations on an I-beam job, only to have the foreman walk over and tap the steel with his knuckle. Every mark was off by at least 4 inches, cost me the whole day re-drilling and patching holes. Anyone else ever had a gadget fail that bad, or do I just stick to the old magnetics from now on?

That thing must have been built by the same folks who make those tape measures that tell you it's 2 inches when it's really 5. At least your foreman didn't start calling you "Four Inches" as a nickname for the rest of the job. Magnetic ones might be boring, but they also don't have a blinking LED that lies straight to your face while the drywall dust is still settling. Sounds like that fancy gizmo went straight from the box to the bottom of the toolbag, right next to the other "trusted" gadgets that only work in the YouTube video.

Skip the tech and feel the studs with your thumb. I've noticed this pattern everywhere, fancy gadgets that promise precision but actually just add more steps to the job. Old school methods might be slower, but they don't lie to you when the foreman's watching.
