Showerthought: should a helper who shows up early get paid for the wait time?
Had a weird week at the shop that got me going on this. Monday our helper showed up 40 minutes early every day, and by Friday that was over 3 hours of standing around on his own time. He never asked to be paid for it, but the old guy on our crew said the shop should cut him a check since he was on site and ready. The other side says no way, showing up early is a choice and the clock starts at 7 like always. Here is the part that bugs me: this kid loaded out tools and staged fittings during that time, so the crew walked in ahead. Do you pay for early arrival, or does that just train everyone to pad the clock? Real curious how other crews handle it.
