Rant: The old foreman's rule about grinding discs still bugs me

Last week I swapped out a cracked head on a 30-year-old boiler in Gary and the new guy asked why I keep a worn-down disc in my bag. My foreman back in 2003 always said a fresh disc cuts too hot and leaves a bad bevel, so I've trusted that even though it feels backwards now. Has anyone else stuck with an old habit from an older guy that you still can't tell if it's actually better?

That disc's probably older than half the guys on your crew now, so might as well keep it for the nostalgia. Maybe the real trick is just telling new guys to respect the grind, whether it's true or not.
