Rant: Cleveland boiler shop says stick welding is dead for new builds, I disagree

I was over at Ohio Structural in Cleveland last Friday picking up some steel and their foreman told me they haven't hired a stick welder in 3 years. They run mig and flux core on everything now. He says it's faster and cheaper. But I see way more porosity in their stuff than what we get with 7018. Am I old school or is there still a place for stick on big pressure vessels?

Man, is porosity really that big of a deal though? I see plenty of clean mig and flux core jobs that hold pressure fine if you dial in the settings right. Maybe we're overthinking it for most shop work.

Read a report from Lincoln Electric that said stick still beats mig on heavy wall vessels where penetration matters. Cleveland shops are chasing speed but that porosity is real.

Lincoln said stick gets better penetration than mig on heavy wall?
