Pro tip: the old guy on the Toledo job told me to stop grinding every weld smooth, and the inspector passed it first try
I was on a boiler tube job outside Toledo last month and I had been going over my cap welds with a grinder until they looked like glass. An old hand named Ray watched me for a bit and said the inspector wants to see the bead pattern, not a polished surface. I stopped grinding the caps on the next section, kept the toes clean and the ripples even, and the X-ray came back clean on the first pass. Wasted probably 3 hours a day before that. So what do you all cap yours at if you do dress them, or do you leave every bead as laid?
Stopped dressing mine almost all the way down after a guy on a pipeline job told me the same thing. Now I just knock off the spatter and leave the cap alone unless there's a high spot. Cut my time way down and haven't had a bad X-ray since.
