Old timer told me I was wasting time on perfect bevels

Last week a guy named Frank with 40 years in the trade watched me spend 20 minutes trying to get a bevel dead flat on a 1" plate. He just shook his head and said 'son, you're not building a watch.' He showed me how he hits it with a grinder in about 3 passes and calls it good, then uses the fit-up to pull the gap closed. I tried his way on a job yesterday and finished an hour early. Has anyone else had a vet change how you work?

Oh man, I gotta disagree a bit with Frank on this one. A good bevel saves you from grinding down a whole weld later.

60 degrees before a root pass @morgan.mary saves you a whole lot of cleanup time.
