Old timer at the union hall changed how I read a blueprint

I was killing time before a shift in Gary last Tuesday when this retired boilermaker named Walt pointed at my layout sheet and said I was chasing dimensions instead of the weld joint itself. He showed me how he marks the sequence on the drawing before touching steel, working the fit-up order backward from the hardest access point. It sounds simple but after 14 years I'd never thought of it that way, and it saved me about 3 hours on a feedwater tank mockup. Anyone else got a veteran trick that flipped their process upside down?
