My old foreman in Buffalo told me to always pre-heat with a rosebud, not a cutting torch

I argued it wasted gas for years, but a weld on a 3-inch steam line last month finally cracked because of the thermal shock. Anyone else have a stubborn old rule they fought that turned out to be right?

Three inch steam line? That's some serious pressure to crack like that. Guess the old guy in Buffalo knew his stuff after all.

Yeah no kidding. That's wild. Old timers really did have it figured out sometimes.

Wonder if the crack started from a bad weld or just metal fatigue?
