Just realized I wasted $400 on a welding hood I didn't need

Been a boilermaker for 12 years and always used a cheap fixed shade hood. Last month I dropped $400 on one of those auto-darkening ones with all the bells and whistles. First job back on a big boiler tube repair and the sensor got confused by the awkward angle I was working at, kept flashing me. Grabbed my old $60 Jackson hood out of the truck and finished the shift without issue. Anyone else find those expensive hoods more trouble than they're worth on tight jobs?

Read an article that said the sensors get tricked by reflective surfaces.
