I finally stopped using the wrong filler rod on stainless
At a job in Houston last spring, I was welding a food-grade tank. Kept getting porosity. Foreman walked over, grabbed my rod, and said 'this is for carbon steel, dummy.' Switched to 308L and it laid perfect. Now I double check every spool before I strike an arc. Anyone else had a boss save them from a stupid mistake?

Honestly, 308L is for 304 stainless, not all stainless, 316 needs 316L rod.

What about the common scenario where you're welding 304 to 316, what rod would you grab then? Seems like a lot of guys just run 308L on everything cause it works well enough in practice. Does the code actually mandate matching the filler to the base metal in those mixed joints, or is it more of a guideline?
