I finally checked my tube sheet holes after 3 years and the difference was eye opening
I do boiler repair work around Toledo and for years I just ran a wire brush through tube holes and called it good. Then last spring a guy on a shutdown showed me his setup and I felt like a rookie. He had a bore scope and a set of plug gauges, and he measured every fourth hole on a 60 inch shell. Turned out about 9 of them were out of round by more than 5 thousandths from years of tube rolling. A wire brush hides all of that. He said he started checking after a leaking tube cost his crew a full weekend of retubing on a unit in Sandusky. I bought a $40 gauge set that night and ran it on my next job, and sure enough I found two holes I would have rolled anyway. Do you guys actually mike your holes or just eyeball them and go?
