Foreman at the Gary job said my tube welds looked like "chicken scratch," and I still hear it when I pick up the stinger
Two winters back we were rolling in a bank of tubes on a recovery boiler up in Gary, Indiana, and this foreman named Dale walked the row with a flashlight before I was even done. He stopped at number 47, tapped the joint with his glove, and said "that one looks like chicken scratch, kid" right in front of the whole crew. Nobody backed me up, not even the guy who watched me lay it in, and I redid that pass three times chasing a bead he never even looked at again after the shift. Funny thing is my X-ray came back clean on every joint that week, but I still think about that dumb comment every single time I strike an arc on a tube sheet. Anybody else got a boss whose words live rent free in their hood, or is it just me?
