Before and after on my tube rolling: 4 minutes per tube down to 90 seconds, and I still can't tell if it's a good thing
When I started at the shop 6 years ago, rolling a tube bundle meant setting each one by feel, and our old foreman would run his hand over every joint before he'd let the hydro go. Last month the new guy brought in a digital torque setup with a preset and we went from about 4 minutes a tube to 90 seconds flat. I'll admit the numbers are dead on and we leaked zero tubes on the last three bundles. But here's what bugs me, we used to hear a bad roll by the sound of the gun, and now everybody just watches the light turn green and moves on. The old timers at the hall say the feel is what saved them on oddball alloys, and the young guys say the gauge can't be argued with. So is the speed worth losing the ear for it, or am I just being an old man about a good tool? Anybody here still rolling by feel on the tricky stuff?
