Why does everyone house rule the feeding phase in Agricola?

I was at a game night in Portland last week and three different people each had their own way of handling the harvest, like one guy just let everyone skip paying for a round if they were short. I can't figure out if this is a common thing or if we just play with overly generous folks. Has anyone else run into this kind of variant floating around, or do most groups stick to the printed rules? Just curious if I'm the weird one for wanting to play it straight.
