Update: my buddy Dale made me rethink house rules that 'fix' a game
Dale came over Saturday to play Power Grid and said something that stuck with me: 'If a game needs three house rules to work, maybe it's not the game for us.' I've always been the guy who patches games (we had 4 house rules for one title at one point), and I defended it hard at the table. But sitting there after he left, I counted how many of those patched games actually make it to the table anymore, and it was 1 out of 6. So now I'm torn. Do house rules save games for you, or do they just hide that your group doesn't like the game?
What did you actually change in those four house rules, and was it a fix or just a nerf to the one strategy somebody at your table leans on too hard? In my experience there's a big difference between patching a broken rule and patching a player who keeps winning the same way. The games that stuck around for us were the ones we played straight, and the patched ones died just like yours did. Your mileage may vary, but I'd bet a couple of those six were never really liked by the group, just tolerated.
