Turns out I was shuffling my deck wrong for 8 years

Last game night at my buddy's place in Denver, someone pointed out that I never let the other player cut the deck after shuffling. I always thought splitting it myself was the polite move, but apparently that's a house rule thing and I was missing the whole point of randomness. A friend who's big into tournament play showed me a proper riffle shuffle and I felt dumb for all those games of Catan where I might have been unintentionally stacking cards. Anyone else have a basic mechanic they messed up for years without noticing?

Thought the same thing with dice once. Always kept the high number facing up when I passed them, figured that was being respectful. Found out years later that’s basically cheating, and my buddy’s face when I did it was priceless. Now we just shake everything in a cup, no fuss.
