The night I realized I was teaching Settlers wrong for 3 years

Last Saturday at the meetup in my basement, a guy named Josh pointed out that I was mixing up the robber rule with the knight cards. I always let people steal resources on defense rolls, which apparently is not how it works. I even checked the rulebook after and felt dumb for misplaying it since 2021. Has anyone else found out they were teaching a game wrong way longer than they want to admit?

Read somewhere that nearly every group plays at least one rule wrong.

Push back on that (respectfully) because I think most groups actually get the core stuff right. People might fudge line of sight or forget a bonus action rule here and there, but the big things like hit points, movement, and attack rolls are pretty hard to mess up if you've played more than a session or two. @sean_walker45 I'd argue that a lot of the "wrong" rules people talk about are actually just optional rules or common house rules that got mixed up with the real ones.
