Ran into a guy at a local game store who claimed he never reads the rulebook first

I was at Dragon's Lair in St. Paul last Saturday picking up some sleeves and this dude in his 40s walks up to the counter muttering about how he just wings every new game he buys. He said he likes the surprise of figuring out rules as he goes, even if it means he plays wrong for the first few rounds. The clerk looked at him like he had three heads, and I couldn't help but jump in. I asked him how he handles complex games like Terraforming Mars or something with a ton of phases. He just shrugged and said he skips the book and makes his group learn by doing. Has anyone else met a player like this? Do they eventually cave and read the manual or do they just keep fumbling through?

Used to think that was some lazy nonsense until I tried it with a deck builder. Now I kinda get it. Theres something fun about discovering how things actually work through pure chaos.

Ha! @the_finley, did that deck builder actually click after all the chaos or was it just a mess?
