I used to track every board game play on paper index cards, now I use a phone app and I kind of miss the cards
Back around 2015 I had a shoebox full of index cards, one per game, and every time my group finished a session I would sit there and write the date, who won, and a one line note about how it went. My buddy Dave always gave me grief about it, said I was wasting 10 minutes after every game night doing homework. Then in 2019 my group grew to 9 people and the cards got impossible to keep straight because people would swap in and out mid night and I would forget whose turn it was to log a win. So I switched to a scoring app on my phone, and yeah it does the math for me and tracks win rates automatically, which is nice. But now nobody passes the phone around to read the old notes, and those dumb little comments like "Dave stalled for 20 minutes on his last turn" were half the fun. I still keep the shoebox on the shelf and pull it out sometimes just to look at the handwriting from games we don't even own anymore. Anyone else go digital with their play tracking and feel like they lost something in the swap?
Honestly it sounds like you're romanticizing a shoebox of paper. Ten minutes after every game night writing cards? That's not nostalgia, that's a chore you trained yourself to enjoy. The notes were fun because they were written right after a game when everyone was still laughing, not because they were on paper. You could still type those dumb comments into the app, you just don't. Dave stalled for 20 minutes is a Dave problem, not a paper problem. Keep the shoebox for the handwriting memories, that's fine, but the tracking itself is better now and you know it.
