I had to choose between a massive Kickstarter pledge or my regular game group

Last month, the new 'Eclipse: Second Dawn' expansion had a $250 all-in pledge with exclusive minis. My regular group meets every Thursday at The Dragon's Hoard cafe, and that cash would cover our tab for like 6 months. I picked the game nights. Honestly, skipping the FOMO felt weird at first, but playing with my crew last week was way better than staring at a box of plastic. Has anyone else passed on a huge pre-order to keep their local game nights going?

My entire board game budget for last year was $300, and I almost blew it all on the 'Mythic Battles: Pantheon' reprint. The shipping alone was like eighty bucks. I ended up using that money to replace our worn-out copy of Catan and buy pizza for the group twice. My shelf of shame thanks me, and my friends definitely appreciated not playing with pieces held together by tape.

Totally get that, I almost dropped a stupid amount on the latest CMON campaign last year. The stretch goals looked amazing but then I realized that money could buy so many ACTUAL game nights with snacks and drinks for everyone. My group still talks about the night we played my old copy of Cosmic Encounter instead of me just showing off new minis. Felt way better to have those memories than another box on the shelf.

Wait, is the cafe tab really only $40 a month for a whole group? That seems low. My local spot charges at least five bucks a drink, so our four-person group would burn through that $250 in about three months, not six. Still the right call though. Holly_garcia has the right idea, fixing a worn-out game everyone actually plays beats a big box of fancy plastic. My copy of Lords of Waterdeep is missing a cube and we just use a blue bead. Nobody cares.
