I finally stopped explaining every rule before we start playing

My friend in Austin just started setting up pieces and said 'let's learn as we go', and it cut our setup time in half. How do you handle teaching new games without losing people's attention?

Let's learn as we go" is basically my new favorite thing now. I had a buddy who tried to teach me this one war game, spent like 45 minutes explaining movement points and line of sight rules, and by the time he was done I didn't even want to play anymore. He finally got frustrated and just said "screw it, here's your piece, let's see what happens." We messed up so many rules that first game but we laughed the whole time and actually remembered them for next time. Some stuff you just gotta break before you get it, you know?

Yeah, just teach the goal and one round of turns. People learn by doing, not listening to a lecture.

Totally applies to software tutorials too. Show me the one thing I need to click, then let me break it myself.
