DAE have a board game night where the choice was play Twilight Imperium or keep your friends?
Got 5 guys together at my place in Columbus two Saturdays ago and we hit the classic wall, break out Twilight Imperium 4th edition for an 8 hour slog or play three rounds of something lighter. We picked TI4 and by hour 6 my buddy Dave was openly negotiating with me to not take his home system while his girlfriend just sat there on her phone. We finished at 2am and two guys have not spoken to me since. Anyone got a house rule for keeping the peace when someone gets stomped in round 3?
This is the same thing that happens at every group dinner where someone insists on the fancy restaurant and then everybody's stressed about the bill at the end. We all want the BIG shared experience but nobody wants to admit the cost until it's already too late. Your Dave situation is just the board game version of that, a guy who said he was fine with a long game until the long game actually started going bad for him. The real issue is you can't house rule away hurt feelings when someone watches 6 hours of work get wiped out in 20 minutes. My advice is to set a hard stop rule before you even set up, like everybody agrees the game ends at midnight no matter what and whoever's ahead wins. It sounds dumb but it saves friendships because nobody feels like they got personally robbed.
