Appreciation post: the guy at my local game store in Toledo who charges $5 to teach rules
I used to be the guy who bought a new board game, cracked the box, and spent 45 minutes squinting at a rulebook while my friends checked their phones. Then last month I paid $5 at a shop in Toledo for a demo of Brass: Birmingham, and the guy walked us through three turns in about 20 minutes. That $5 taught me more than five YouTube videos ever did, and now I honestly think anybody who refuses to pay for a rules teach is wasting everybody's game night. Is $5 the normal rate near you, or does your shop do it for free?
Heard a story on a podcast about a shop in Austin that tried this and got yelled at by regulars who said teaching was always free. That said, your experience makes sense to me. Twenty minutes of hands on turns beats reading a rulebook alone on the couch for an hour, no question. The $5 also keeps the teacher from feeling like a free babysitter for grown adults. Local shop near me does it free but only on Saturdays with a signup sheet, and you get maybe 10 minutes. Paying a little for a real teach sounds like money well spent.
