A game night in Portland taught me to always bring a backup

We were at a friend's apartment trying to play a new legacy game that needed an app. Halfway through the first session, their internet went out for three hours. The whole night was a bust because we couldn't get past the digital lock. Now I pack a simple card game in my bag, just in case. What's a good, small box game that can save a stalled game night?

Three hours with no internet? That's brutal. Love the backup plan though.

But what if the backup plan is the whole point? Like, maybe we need those forced breaks to remember how to just sit with our own thoughts for a minute. I wonder if being constantly online is making us worse at handling quiet. Three hours offline sounds kind of nice now that I think about it.

Actually my buddy Dave had the same thing happen but with a twist - his host's phone died and the app was tied to that one device. He ended up salvaging the night by pulling out a deck of cards and teaching everyone a drinking game called "President" that got way more competitive than the fancy board game would have. Sometimes the analog backup ends up being the real highlight, you know?
