Vent: my coal fire went cold halfway through a gate hinge job, and I had to think fast
Was out in my shop off the back alley in Fort Wayne last Thursday forging a set of strap hinges for a buddy's gate, and about 40 minutes in I noticed the fire was dying and the coal was clumping up on me. I'd been running the blower too hard and burned through my hot spot before I even got to the second hinge leaf. So I killed the air, pulled the clinker out with my poker, and stacked a fresh bed of green coal around the edges instead of dumping it all in the middle. Took about 15 minutes of babying it with a slow air trickle before I had a clean fire again, and the rest of the hinges came out fine with no burnt steel. What saved me was keeping a small bucket of soaked coal nearby so the fire didn't run away on me. I still lost maybe 20 minutes on the clock though. Curious what you all do when your fire starts clumping up mid job, do you dig it out right away or try to work around it?
