Unpopular take: I stopped normalizing my steel before heat treat

Everyone says you gotta normalize 3 times for good grain structure, but idk, I tried skipping it on a batch of 1084 knives last month and they came out just as tough. Has anyone else tried this or am I just lucky so far?

Right there with you man, I've skipped normalize steps before too.

My buddy Jake tried the same thing on a batch of 1075 blades last year and three of them snapped during a chopping test. He'd skipped the normalizing to save time and ended up with a bunch of scrap steel. You might have gotten lucky with that 1084 batch, but I wouldn't count on it every time... grain structure is one of those things you don't notice until it fails and then it's too late. I'd rather spend the extra hour in the forge than risk a blade breaking on someone using it.
