Two smiths in my shop argue about coal forges vs gas, and I'm stuck in the middle
Last month I finally got my first real shop setup going in a rented bay outside Tulsa, and I invited two older smiths to break it in with me. One brought his own coal and kept going on about how gas forges "kill the soul of the craft," while the other said coal is just dirty, slow, and bad for your lungs. We spent more time arguing than hammering, and I ended up with two half finished bottle openers and a headache. I get that coal gives you that old school fire and control, but gas is clean and I can actually see my work. Where do you all land on this, is coal worth the hassle or am I just being lazy?
