Thought anvils were anvils until I used a real one

I figured any hunk of metal would work for flattening stock. Then I picked up a beat up Fisher anvil at an auction for $200 and the rebound on my hammer blows was night and day different. Anyone else hold out on upgrading something basic like this?

You ever tried using a railroad anvil for a week? I did. Thought it was fine until I hit a piece of hot steel on a proper Fisher. The hammer just BOUNCED back at me like it had springs in it. That old railroad chunk felt like hitting a sponge in comparison. Total game changer.

My Fisher has a serial number from 1912. It weighs 180 pounds on the nose. I got it from a guy who used it for 40 years in his farrier shop. The face has a slight sway but the rebound is still insane. You cannot beat that old cast steel for efficiency. A cheap anvil just eats your arm energy and gives nothing back. Once you feel a good one there is no going back.
