Steel Suppliers Changing Grades Mid-Order
Been buying from the same steel supplier for years, but lately I keep running into a real headache. They'll list a specific alloy, say 5160, and that's what I order for my spring work. But the last three batches have had slightly different stuff mixed in, nothing major on the sheet but it acts totally different in the quench. My normal tempering routine leaves it either too soft or way too brittle. Now I have to test every single bar before I even start a project, which adds hours I didn't plan for. It feels like they're just slapping whatever's close enough into the same bin to clear stock. Really throws off the consistency of my work, you know? Makes me not want to trust the label anymore, which is a huge problem when you're trying to run a shop.

Sounds like they're cutting corners. Man, that would drive me nuts! When you rely on a material to act a certain way, and it doesn't, it ruins everything. Like, if your tempering is off, parts could break when they get used. I've heard of batches changing and making whole projects useless. It's not just about lost time, it's about safety and your name too. Once you can't trust the label, every order becomes a guess.

Do you track which materials give you the most trouble? From what I've seen, batch changes can sneak up on you. How do you protect yourself from bad shipments?
