Spent $45 on a cheap anvil from Harbor Freight and it was a total mistake

I figured I'd save some cash and grab their 55lb anvil for my first real project. The face chipped on my third hammer strike on a 1/2 inch bar. The rebound was terrible too, like hitting a block of concrete. Returned it the next day and put that money toward a used Vulcan anvil I found on Facebook marketplace for $120. Anyone else get burned by cheap starter anvils?

My first hammer strike sounded like I was ringing a dinner bell.

The best thing I ever did was swap to a lighter hammer for the first few rounds. That heavy one was just too much and I kept ringing that bell too. Once I got a smaller hammer, my strikes got cleaner and more controlled. It made a huge difference in how consistent my hits were. Have you tried switching tools to see if that changes the sound?
