Saw a guy at a ren faire using rebar as forge stock

Was at the Maryland Ren Faire last weekend and this blacksmith was pulling rebar straight out of his scrap bucket. He said it's got enough carbon to hold an edge for garden tools and stuff. Anyone else ever tried forging with rebar for real projects?

Rebar's junk metal in most cases, the carbon content is too inconsistent to trust for anything that needs a decent edge. Garden tools take impact and wear, using mystery steel from construction scrap is just asking for the edge to chip or roll after a few uses. Better to spend the few bucks on known 1095 or even leaf spring steel if you want results that actually hold up.

Is it really that serious for a garden hoe though?
