Rant: my anvil stand collapsed mid-project on Tuesday

I was drawing out a 1 inch round bar for a gate hinge and the whole oak block under my anvil just split right down the grain, sending the anvil sideways onto the shop floor. Took me 20 minutes to reset everything with a steel shim and lag bolts, and the piece I was working on is now twisted from the impact. Anyone else have a stand failure ruin a piece, and what did you switch to that actually holds up?
