My tongs slipped on a hot blade and I learned a cheap trick
Last Tuesday I was drawing out a chef knife in my shop near Tulsa and my flat jaw tongs let go right as I pulled it from the forge. The blade hit the dirt floor, kicked up a little dust, and I had to grab it with the other set before it cooled into a weird curve. Turns out I was gripping too close to the end, so I started wrapping the tong jaws with a strip of old leather belt for extra bite. Has anyone else tried rubber or leather on their tongs, or do you just rely on a better fit?
