I spent 4 months filing my hammer faces smooth before I watched a 70 year old smith at a demo in Tulsa
He told me a slightly domed face with a light cross peen is what actually moves steel where you want it, and I felt pretty dumb standing there with my mirror finish hammer that just bounced off the work.
