Hot take: I swapped my coal forge for propane 8 months ago and I'm not going back
Honestly I was that guy who swore coal was the only real way to forge. Eight months back I got tired of the clinker fights and the smoke complaints from my neighbor Dave, so I bought a 2 burner propane setup for $280. My fire control got way tighter, my steel stopped picking up sulfur, and I can actually see the color of the heat instead of guessing through the haze. My coal pile in the backyard is still sitting there going stale. Anybody else make the switch and actually miss the coal, or is it just me?
Kept your coal pile for a reason or what? Because I did the same swap and mine sat there for a year before I finally gave it away to a kid just starting out. What gets me is you said 8 months and that sulfur thing hit home, I was always fighting that orange flaking on my welds before. So here's my real question... do you find yourself missing the slow fire, like the way coal lets you walk away for a minute and come back to a banked heat? Propane shuts off and it's just done, and that part threw me more than the smoke ever did.
