Coal forge vs propane forge, which one do you actually use?

I built a coal forge 2 years ago and a propane one last spring, thinking I'd use both for different jobs. Turns out I reach for the propane 9 times out of 10 just because it lights fast and doesn't smoke me out. The coal forge does get hotter for forge welding, but the cleanup and ash mess is brutal. Anyone else end up sticking with just one type after trying both?

Ha yeah I feel that. My coal forge is basically a lawn ornament now cause I got tired of looking like a chimney sweep every time I wanted to heat some metal.

Respect the coal forge more than most. That instant heat and fire control for welding is worth the mess to me. Just gotta plan ahead and set up outside so the smoke doesn't ruin your day.

Made the mistake of setting up my coal forge too close to my neighbor's laundry line once. Took about three heats before I noticed all her white shirts had turned a nice smoky gray. She wasn't impressed, but at least my forge work was on point that day.
