Broke my favorite cross pein hammer this morning

Was working on a bottle opener. Third one this week. The handle just snapped right at the eye. Split clean in two. Must have had a hidden crack. Now I gotta drive 45 minutes to the nearest tool supplier. Anyone else ever have a handle fail on a hammer you've used for years?

Well, that's a real shame, especially when it's a hammer you've been using for years. I'm curious though, were you using that same bottle opener pattern all three times? I've found sometimes a particular design puts way more stress on the handle at the eye, especially if your striking angle is a little off. A friend of mine snapped two handles in a row trying to punch a tight curve in some thick brass. Might save you the drive if you think about whether that pattern itself is causing the problem.

Oh wait, isn't it "cross peen" not "cross pein"?
