Appreciation post: That old knife sharpening station at the county fair

I stopped by the blacksmithing demo at the county fair last weekend and saw a guy using a hand-cranked grinding wheel that looked like it was from 1880. It was loud and wobbly, but dang if his utility knife didn't come off it shaving-sharp. Made me wonder if I'm overcomplicating my setup with all this modern gear.

Old tools just work better sometimes, simple as that.

A good socket set from the 90s still gets me through every job without issue.

My grandpa used to say the same thing about his hand-crank grinder. But I've got a 15 year old WorkSharp that does the same job in 30 seconds without making my arm tired. I just don't see the romance in struggling with a rusty wheel that wobbles like it's got a flat tire. Yeah it's neat and all for a fair demo but for actual daily use I'll take the electric one every time.
