A welder at the Puyallup fair told me to quench my punch in oil, and my first one cracked in half
I was at the fair in Puyallup two summers back and got talking to an old welder watching me heat up a punch for my anvil. He told me to skip the water bucket and dunk my punches in used motor oil after every heat, said it would keep them from mushrooming. I tried it on a 5/8 inch punch and heard a pop on the third quench, the tip split right off. Turns out the oil wasn't cooling it slow, it was cooling uneven, and the whole punch was ruined. What do you all use for punches, water, oil, or just let them air cool?
