Got stuck in a hotel for three days and finally watched 'The Bear'
My flight got canceled due to a storm in Chicago, so I had a lot of time to kill. I ended up watching the whole first season of 'The Bear' in one sitting, and it was so tense I forgot about my travel problems. Has anyone else had a show completely take over during a bad situation?

Oh man, I totally get that. I used to think I couldn't watch stressful shows when I was already stressed, like what's the point? But getting sucked into something that intense actually makes your own problems fade away for a bit. The Bear is perfect for that, it just grabs you. I had a similar thing with a delayed train and that show Uncut Gems, which is basically a two hour panic attack but it worked.

Wasn't it funny how we avoid stressful shows when we're already stressed? I was the same for years. Then I got snowed in once and watched all of "Chernobyl". My own worries about the power going out just vanished because I was so wrapped up in that world. It really showed me how a gripping story, even an intense one, can be a total escape.

Grabs onto what @willow_garcia said about The Bear, because I've noticed this pattern everywhere now. It's like our brains need something big and awful to focus on so the small everyday stresses get put in the right place (you know, like how worrying about a work email feels silly when you're watching a nuclear meltdown). There's this weird comfort in knowing someone else's situation is way worse, but it's not like we're being mean about it. It's more like the show or movie gives our anxiety a proper target instead of letting it bounce around on little things. And honestly, I think that's why true crime is so popular too, it's just us trying to get our fear under control by pointing it at something specific.
