Tried to save money on a kitchen reno, ended up flooding my own house

Last month I decided to save $200 by installing the dishwasher myself instead of paying a plumber. I hooked up the supply line but didn't tighten the fitting enough, ran a load, and went to bed. Woke up at 2am to water dripping through the ceiling into my living room. The whole kitchen floor was soaked and I had to rip out the laminate. Now I just pay professionals for anything involving water, learned that lesson hard.

Hiring a plumber for that dishwasher hookup would have been money well spent, I've been there myself with a DIY plumbing mistake that cost way more than the pro would have. A neighbor taught me to always do a short test cycle with the cabinet doors open and stay nearby for the first 10 minutes to catch any leaks early. Your mileage may vary, but now I figure in the cost of a licensed pro for anything that involves water pressure or gas lines and sleep a lot better.

Man, that's so true. I learned that test cycle trick the hard way too after flooding my own kitchen. You really can't skip that first 10 minutes watching for drips or puddles. And yeah, for gas lines especially, I just call a pro now, not worth the risk of blowing something up.
