Tore down a retaining wall I built 3 years ago because it was leaning bad

Went to check on a stone wall I stacked at my buddy's cabin near Lake George last summer. The whole thing was bowing out a good 4 inches from frost heave. Had to rent a mini excavator for $200 and start over, learned I should have put drainage gravel behind it.

Drainage gravel is non-negotiable up there, learned that one the hard way too.

Has anyone else ever stood there watching water pool like a mini swimming pool and just thought "well, that's a problem for future me"? Because I sure did, and future me was not happy about it. Made a whole lot of extra work for myself just to save a few bucks on gravel.
