Told my uncle I knew how to lay hardwood, then ate my words in front of his whole construction crew

I was helping him add a sunroom to his house in Pittsburgh last summer and bragged I could handle the flooring solo, no problem. Ten minutes in I cut the first plank 3 inches too short because I measured from the wrong wall, and his foreman just stared at me while the guys laughed. Anybody else ever talk themselves up to family and get immediately humbled?

Respectfully, measuring from the wrong wall just means you learned where the real starting point is. That foreman probably laughed because he's seen a dozen rookies do the exact same thing, not because you're some fake. Hardwood flooring is one of those jobs where you get one shot to measure right, and bragging a little to family is practically tradition. You ate your words in front of the crew but now you know exactly which wall to measure from. That's not a humbling moment, that's free training from guys who do it every day.
