The day I locked my keys in the truck with the engine running during a storm

I mean, this was back in March during that freak hail storm in Denver, and I had just finished loading all my roofing tools into the bed. I hopped out to grab a tarp from the cab, and my dumb brain hit the lock button on the door panel as I swung it shut. Engine idling, wipers going, and my only spare key was sitting on the passenger seat because I had set it down there the night before. It took me two hours and a $180 locksmith to get back in, and I stood there drenched, watching my phone die while the truck hummed like it was laughing at me. Everyone at the shop brings it up every time it rains now, and honestly, part of me thinks that's fair since I've done a lot of stupid stuff, but this one takes the cake. Has anyone else managed to shut themselves out of a running car with the spare key visible through the glass? I need to know I'm not the only one.

Did you try the old coat hanger trick before calling the locksmith? I always figured that only worked in movies until my neighbor did it to his own truck last winter. But honestly, I used to think people who locked themselves out were just careless, and then I did the exact same thing at a gas station with my kid in the back seat. The spare key was right there on the floor mat, and the car was running, and I just stood there feeling like the biggest fool on the planet. So yeah, that changed my whole view on it. Nothing makes you humble faster than watching your own car hum along without you.
