My backup drive died 2 days before a client deadline in Austin, and I had zero copies
It had 4 years of design files on it and I never once checked if it was actually working. What is your cheapest reliable backup setup, because I am never trusting a single drive again?
This same thing happened to a buddy of mine, he lost a whole year of wedding photos because his drive just clicked one day and that was it. The cheap fix he landed on was two external drives plus free software that mirrors one to the other on a schedule, cost him maybe a hundred bucks total. Thing is, a backup that never gets checked is just a hope, so he set a reminder to actually open the files every couple weeks and make sure they load. The other piece people skip is keeping one drive somewhere else, like a drawer at work or a parent's house, because a fire or a flood takes out both copies if they sit on the same desk. For a client deadline kind of setup, that combo of two drives and one off site copy is about as cheap and safe as it gets without paying for cloud space every month.
