My $300 "professional" camera bag turned out to be a glorified lunchbox

After hauling that thing through the airport in Chicago for a year, I realized the padding was just foam from a packaging crate, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has found a bag that actually protects gear without costing a fortune.

Read a photography forum thread last week where a guy tested bags with a drop test and found that the cheap ones from Amazon with thick foam inserts beat out most big brand names. Made me wonder why we all pay extra for a logo when the inside is basically recycled packing material. You really need to look at the actual strap quality and zippers first, those are what break or fail you in the field, not the padding. Also try putting your gear in a padded insert inside a regular backpack, that setup has saved me hundreds and works just as well for travel. The bag companies are just selling you the idea of protection, not the real thing most of the time.
