Unpopular opinion: Hand-built wheels are still the best method
Factory wheels come out quick, but they often skip small details. With hand-building, you can catch every issue and make it just right. It's a craft that's disappearing, and that's a real loss.

Factory methods waste way more aluminum per wheel.

But what about the big picture? Factories use machines that cut aluminum with very little error (way less than hand methods, you know). When you make thousands of wheels, the waste per wheel actually goes down because the process is so tuned. People often forget that set-up costs are spread out over many units. So, in the end, factory methods might save aluminum, not waste it. That's just how mass production works.

Wait, what? That doesn't even make sense... The whole point of a factory is doing the same exact cut over and over. A person with a saw is gonna mess up more often and toss pieces. If a machine is off by a hair, they fix it once and then a thousand perfect wheels come out. How does more mistakes save material?
