Trusted a shop's torque specs, stripped a dropout in 20 minutes

Local shop told me to follow the frame spec sheet exactly, even for an old steel frame. I torqued the rear axle nut to 30 ft-lbs like they said, and the dropout threads just gave out. It was a 1987 Fuji, and that right side is now helicoiled. I should have trusted the feel from years of doing this, not a generic chart. Anyone else had a shop's official spec wreck a frame part?
